These Secret Journeys
The Big Waste.

It made me so happy to watch The Big Waste Food Network special. Chefs Flay and Simon competed against Anne Burrell and Alex Guarnaschelli to see who could go around to shops and farms and bring back as much food that was going to be thrown away. There are ridiculous rules for why food gets thrown away such as a chicken having a broken wing or corn being pushed down to the ground by a hurricane. Really??? It’s ironic that anyone would worry about something as small as this when there are tons of preservatives and chemicals going into our food that are actually harmful. Americans are already eating much more than their fill but to waste so much good food on top of that is just atrocious. It inspired me so much to see Bobby Flay and Michael Simon giving a butcher shop advice to have a seminar once a month with chefs on how to use the pieces of meat that would normally get thrown away. A really crafty cook could use all of the food and still end up with a delicious meal just like they did on the show -a nice fish plate, short rib and peach dessert. I hope that Food Network will expand this special into something bigger. It could really make a difference :)

My latest crime fighting favorite, many more gray areas than the usual shows and of course, Matt Bomer. I was always attracted to the ads for White Collar and now I’m already done with the second season.

The Future of Time

This piece really resonated with me just because I am such an accelerated person and I always feel a sense of urgency but when it comes down to it, I usually end up waiting on others or for things to happen. I don’t know if it will be possible for our culture to take this message seriously because productivity is such a big tenet of capitalism but I hope it does because it might help us live longer and more fulfilled lives.

In practice, time bending might mean using new technologies to soften the rigid time we have been taught to believe is real. Maybe the next time you make an appointment with a friend, keep it fuzzy. See what “around 6 p.m.” feels like since you both will have cell phones and can find each other when you need to. To the degree that your schedule has any flexibility, maybe time bending means surfing your natural periods of concentration, working when you are sharpest, even if it’s at 11 p.m., and going down when your attention dims.

Beyond technology, time-bending means willfully stepping back from the imagined urgencies your culture handed you. How many activities does your child need to be part of? Can you cancel just one appointment next week? How about leaving early enough for an appointment that you have time to hang around and just wait? How about keeping some version of a Sabbath — a day where you don’t buy anything or drive anywhere or accomplish any damn thing? Finally, and most important, how about just slowing down?

Really.

As you go from your car to the office, walk slowly. As you walk from the elevator to your desk, move slowly. Simply slow down. Opt out of our culture’s principle, and now antiquated, time-logic of speed and efficiency to see what happens.

The point, ultimately, is that a new time coming, whether we want it or not. If we want it, we can, in our own way, try and shape our new time into something that just might make our own lives more mindful, more connected and more meaningful.

It’s exciting that all of these Latinas were brought together for this cover. Natalie Morales will also be doing a special feature on Access Hollywood Sept. 17 and 18 about the top 15 Latinas chosen, which will include exclusive interviews!

My very own Venice scrapbook page including my own photography :D
Trev’s been teaching me some Photoshop skills - I’m finally getting comfortable with it. I want to scrapbook each city from my Europe trip last year. So behind! I’ve been inspired for too long by digital scrapbooking. It’s time I learn it myself. I need a hobby for nights and weekends when I’m not working anyway. So weird not to have to study 24/7.

Working on this film and saw it tonight. What an amazing movie! It was so touching and compelling despite the violence of MMA fighting. Tom Hardy is going to be a great Bane. I can’t wait to see them at the premiere!

I timed the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls perfectly this quarter so that Rory was worrying about finding a job after college as I was (and am) and graduating at the same time as I am! Watching this show was a great journey. It’s some of the best writing I’ve seen in TV and I loved that two females were able to carry the entire show. The relationships and plot felt genuine and the humor was intelligent. We need more shows like this one! It’s odd that neither Lauren Graham nor Alexis Bledel were able to continue their careers on a high note after the show though…

I wish I had the money to see this side of Paris when I went last summer! Absolutely gorgeous.
